Finalists at the InnovationAus Awards 2025

A Revolutionary Collaboration to Tackle Plastic Waste
Each year, over 20 million metric tons of plastic seep into the environment. With the global production nearing 460 million tons annually, the need for breakthrough solutions has never been more urgent.
Enter EcoPha Biotech, an Australian climate-tech pioneer producing next-generation PHA bioplastic, and Terra Sol, a Sydney-based design powerhouse turning science into sustainable consumer culture. Their collaboration is now nationally recognized — as finalists at the InnovationAus 2025 Awards for Excellence under the Energy & Renewables category!

What Makes This Bioplastic Different?
EcoPha’s PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) is fully compostable, marine-safe, and leaves no microplastic residue. Derived from Pongamia oil, this innovation is grown, extracted, and refined right here in Australia — from seed to solution.
🌿 The result? A closed-loop, carbon-friendly supply chain.
Headquartered in Victoria, with labs in Perth.
In collaboration with Terra Sol, based in Sydney.
“Terra Sol takes that science and transforms it through design,” says Terra Sol CEO Louise Sykes.
“Together, we’re proving that scalable biotech and great design can inspire consumers and businesses alike.”
Products That Make a Statement
The EcoPha × Terra Sol collaboration isn’t just about innovation—it’s about mainstream transformation.
Stylish, biodegradable takeaway cups
Single-use hospital-grade cutlery
Sustainable packaging in schools and universities
Design-first cultural storytelling
Feels like plastic, behaves like nature
These products are already in use across Australian cafés, healthcare settings, and educational institutions, offering a guilt-free alternative to conventional plastic.
From Pongamia to PHB Powder: The Science Behind It
The EcoPha process begins with Pongamia seeds, a sustainable oil source. Through a sophisticated fermentation and extraction process, this oil is converted into PHB powder, a pure form of PHA plastic.
This material is then molded into final-use packaging and consumer items.
Fully compostable in soil and marine environments within months.
Breaks down with zero microplastic residue.
Recognition That Matters
Being named a finalist in the InnovationAus Awards validates not just the science — but the vision.
“This nomination is a powerful signal that Australia is embracing innovations the world urgently needs,” says Sykes.
“It proves that science and creativity, united, can lead the way in sustainable material design.”
