This needs a systems approach, and we are developing a broad range of scientific and technological solutions for the entire plastics supply chain to support government and industry initiatives, eliminate litter, and divert plastic waste into a resource to build Australia’s circular economy,” Dr Lau explained.</p><p>The Bioplastics Innovation Hub will be based at Murdoch University’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia, and will play a crucial role in training the next generation workforce in advanced <a href="https://www.australianmanufacturing.com.au/tag/biomanufacturing/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><strong>biomanufacturing</strong></a>. </p><p>The initiative aligns with CSIRO’s goal of reducing plastic waste entering the Australian environment by 80 per cent by 2030, supporting Australia’s commitment to the United Nations Global Treaty on plastic pollution and the Australian government’s National Plastics Plan.</p>								</div>

It’s a warning for the world that will shape how we tackle the widespread waste we’ve created.</p><p>Professor Davey Jones from Murdoch University is leading a global study to understand how and where plastics are affecting even our most remote environments.</p><p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-recalc-dims="1" class="alignleft" src="https://i0.wp.com/ecopha.bio/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/The-biotech-that-can-beat-our-plastic-problem.jpeg?resize=633%2C353&#038;ssl=1" alt="The biotech that can beat our plastic problem" width="633" height="353" /></p><p>“Most of the plastic in the ocean comes from the land,” Professor Jones says.</p><p>“While the issues of the plastic pollution in our oceans is clear, the impact of plastic on land is largely unknown but the scale of the problem is plain to see.”</p><div>In some countries, the pollution has become so severe that when viewed from the air, land appears white because there is so much plastic.</div><p>“It’s not only the pollution we can see around us, but we’ve also discovered that microplastics are being absorbed by weather systems and distributed deep into continents across the globe.”</p><p>Professor Jones is looking at how widespread this distribution is, what path plastics subsequently take through the soil and the speed and amount of plastic that is transferring to our freshwater systems.</p><p>“We’re also looking at the contaminants – think pesticides, metals, viruses – that are travelling with these plastics and the potential for them to enter the food chain.”</p><div><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wJrdKg66nnc" frameborder="0"></iframe></div><p>It’s well known that plastics and the chemicals that leak from them are present in our food, however, scientists are just scratching the surface of how pervasive microplastics are.</p><p>“If they’re everywhere, they could be in everything,” Professor Jones said.</p><p>“The big worry is that plastic in the environment is increasing year-on-year and we have no idea what the critical threshold is at which point ecosystems or human health are affected.”</p><h2>Next generation solutions</h2><p>While Professor Jones’ team scopes the scale of our plastics problem, Murdoch University students are already working on the solutions.</p><p>From finding ways to completely break down waste to developing compostable bio-plastic alternatives that come from and return to the earth, the young bioplastics team is breaking new ground.</p><p> </p><blockquote><p>Bio-plastic production from micro-organisms is a cool process where tiny living beings like bacteria help make plastic,”<br />PhD student Crystal Young</p></blockquote><p>These microorganisms eat renewable resources, like food waste, and turn them into plastic materials. It&#8217;s important because it provides a way to make plastic without using fossil fuels.</p><p>“My research is using microbes from extreme environments to create biopolymers, which are strong, lightweight, flexible chains of atoms that can do the same job as synthetic plastics – the difference is that they <a>biodegrade,</a> ” she said.</p><p>While Crystal is working with microbes as they are found in nature, PhD student Harrison O’Sullivan is exploring how to change the genetic makeup of microorganisms to produce other biodegradable products.</p><p>“Microbes can be efficient little factories, producing many important substances that we use in day-to-day life, from alcohols, to insulin and cancer treatments,” Harrison said.</p><p>“My research focuses on genetically engineering these organisms to produce a biodegradable plastic from renewable resources.”</p><p>This involves taking different genetic pieces from a range of organisms and putting them back together within a dedicated host bacteria so that it can produce the right bioplastic for industry to use.</p><p>PhD student Joseph Boctor, who has recently moved from Egypt to study with the Murdoch team, is tackling the problem from another perspective: how to break down the pollution that we’ve already created.</p><p>“We’re looking at safe and useful ways to degrade synthetic plastics made from fossil fuels that would usually take up to 1000 years to degrade, while finding a good use for the products that result from the degradation,” Joseph said.</p><p> </p><blockquote><p>Finding plastic degrading enzymes would allow us to get rid of conventional plastic waste without impacting our seas and soils.”<br />PhD student Joseph Boctor</p></blockquote><p>It’s a critical avenue to address the problem, especially for Australia, which produces more single-use plastic waste per capita than any other country in the world – about 60 kilograms per person a year.</p><p>These research projects are being overseen by Professor Daniel Murphy, who leads the Bioplastic Innovation Hub established at Murdoch in partnership with CSIRO and industry.</p><p>A microbiologist and biochemist, he’s well positioned to help solve the world’s plastics problem.</p><p>“Plastic has long been a part of our everyday lives and now it’s everywhere – in the land, oceans, atmosphere, even in our food and drinks,” Professor Murphy said.</p><p> </p><blockquote><p>It’s got to a point where we unintentionally eat hundreds of pieces of microplastic a day, about the weight of a credit card each week.”<br />Professor Daniel Murphy</p></blockquote><p>Changing that requires a radical change in the way we make, use, recycle and think about plastics.</p><p>“Compostable bioplastics are a game changer for overcoming this waste,” Professor Murphy said.</p><p>“I see a future where large-scale industries are growing microbes to make bioplastics. /></a> While the lion’s share of the sector’s emissions are generated through supply chains, single-use plastics – ranging from personal protective equipment and hospital gowns to medicine cups, IV bags and catheters – are a prevalent problem.</p><p>Plastics, making up a third of hospital waste generated in Australia, are largely relegated to landfill.</p><p>In the pursuit of a more circular health care economy, <i>create</i> takes a look at some local and international innovations that could help to make an impact.</p><h3>Pharmaceutical packing bottles from recycled resin</h3><p>Earlier this year, Canadian-based plastic upcycling company Loop Industries unveiled a new pharmaceutical packaging bottle made with 100 per cent recycled virgin quality PET resin, developed in collaboration with pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices leader Bormioli Pharma.</p><p>Loop-branded PET resin has met the rigorous regulatory standards for pharmaceutical packaging in both the US (USP &lt;661.1&gt;, Plastic Materials of Construction) and Europe (Ph.Eur. 3.1.15, Polyethylene Terephthalate for Containers for Preparations not for Parenteral Uses), designed to uphold the integrity, safety and quality of medical products.</p><p>“Loop PET resin creates circularity for low-value waste while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and can save up to 360,000 t of CO2 per year compared to virgin PET made from fossil fuels,” said Adel Essaddam, Vice-President of Science and Innovation at Loop.</p><h3>Biopolymers to replace petroleum-based plastics</h3><p>To address the large levels of material waste generated by the health care sector, a team of local mechanical, manufacturing and chemical engineers from the University of New South Wales have joined forces with biotechnology company Ecopha Biotech to develop biodegradable plastic packaging products.</p><p>The Innovative Development of Biodegradable Healthcare Packaging Products initiative, powered by a $3 million grant over three years by the Cooperative Research Centres Projects, aims to develop a new generation of health care packaging products using biodegradable polymer polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs).</p><p>The PHA-based packing will replace petroleum-based plastics, offering safety, high performance and sustainability.</p></div></div><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-94adf19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-testimonial" data-id="94adf19" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="testimonial.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><div class="elementor-testimonial-name">Associate Professor Jin Zhang</div><div class="elementor-testimonial-name"> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-3463d06 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor" data-id="3463d06" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="text-editor.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><p>With health care plastic waste amounting to 1.25 million t per year, there was a “strong drive” to develop a biodegradable polymer, said Australian Research Council Future Fellow Associate Professor Jin Zhang, from UNSW Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.</p><p>“There are more than 150 types of PHA monomers that present a wide range of mechanical and physiochemical properties,” she said. “Because of this versatility, PHAs are widely considered as one of the main candidates to replace conventional plastics.”</p><p>Due to their flexible properties, PHAs can eventually replace polypropylene, polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS), the main polymers of today’s global polymer market.</p><p>“PHAs are 100 per cent bio-based and biodegradable,” Zhang said. “They can be made using plant feedstocks such as vegetable oils, sugars or starches by bacteria fermentation.”</p><p>With millions of tons of plastics ending up in marine environments every year, PHA has another property that sets it apart, ARC Laureate Fellow Professor Cyrille Boyer from UNSW Chemical Engineering told create.</p><p>“PHAs can biodegrade in seawater, which is not the case for many polymers classified as biodegradable,” he said.</p><p>There are several challenges that come with focusing on sustainable health care packaging.</p><p>“For example, if a plastic has to be used directly in contact with patients, it should not release toxic compounds, according to the regulations,” Boyer explained.</p><p>PHA biocompatibility is an important advantage, Zhang said.</p><p>“Due to the fact that PHAs are non-toxic, and they occur naturally in human tissues and blood, they have been used in medical applications,” she said.</p><p>But there are commercial considerations, too. Because biopolymers are more expensive to produce than petroleum-based polymers, health care packaging – also more expensive than other forms such as food packaging – seemed to fit the bill.</p><p>“We will therefore have a smaller margin to meet to [ensure there is a] business benefit,” Zhang said.</p><h3>Reusable soft mist inhalers</h3><p>Around 2.5 million, or 11 per cent, of Australians have asthma. But pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs), commonly used for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, are a significant hidden contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.</p><p>In fact, the gas in a salbutamol pMDI has the same impact on global warming as the tailpipe exhaust from a 300 km car trip.</p><p>To reduce the carbon footprint of inhalers, pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim developed a soft mist, propellant-free inhaler. With carbon dioxide emissions 20 times lower than its pMDI counterparts, using the company’s Respimat inhaler is the equivalent of switching out a petrol car for a hybrid in terms of annual carbon footprint reduction.</p></div></div><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-2d00545 elementor-widget elementor-widget-testimonial" data-id="2d00545" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="testimonial.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><div class="elementor-testimonial-wrapper"><div class="elementor-testimonial-content">&#8220;WE HAVEN’T SEEN MUCH EVOLUTION TOWARDS MORE ENVIRONMENTAL ASTHMA DEVICES UNTIL NOW.&#8221;</div><div class="elementor-testimonial-meta"><div class="elementor-testimonial-meta-inner"><div class="elementor-testimonial-details"><div class="elementor-testimonial-name">Michele Goldman</div><div class="elementor-testimonial-name"> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-4f0428a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor" data-id="4f0428a" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="text-editor.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><p>The Respimat device can also be re-used for up to six months, as opposed to non-reusable inhalers that last a month.</p><p>According to Asthma Australia, the “new-generation” inhaler, listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in 2021, could usher in a sustainable approach to asthma.</p><p>“We haven’t seen much evolution towards more environmental asthma devices until now,” said CEO of Asthma Australia Michele Goldman.</p><p>There are also plenty of dry powder devices available in Australia which don’t contain hydrofluorocarbon propellant gases, including Turbuhaler, Accuhaler, Ellipta, Spiromax, Handihaler, Breezhaler, Zonda and Genuair.</p><h3>Everyday heroes</h3><p>Everyone can help to make a difference to reduce health care waste, both in and outside the lab. Expired and unused medicines can be returned to pharmacies for environmentally safe disposal through the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) project.</p><p>Returning unused antibiotics also helps to prevent antimicrobial resistance by reducing the development of resistant strains of bacteria from antibiotics leaching into the environment.</p><p>These days, even finished medicine packs are worth returning, with more and more pharmacies launching blister pack recycling programs.</p><p>Packaging for thought.</p></div></div>								</div>

									<p><b>The tide needs to turn on how much plastic we use, and where it ends up.</b></p><p>For every metre of coastline across the globe, there’s the equivalent of seven grocery bags full of rubbish. Soft plastics, like food packaging, are the biggest killers to marine life  And of the litter found along Australia’s coastlines, three-quarters of it is plastic. In addition to this, plastic use is expected to double by 2040. This is unsustainable.</p><p>Therefore, we’ve announced our Ending Plastic Waste Mission. It&#8217;s a global issue. </span>We are working with a range of international partners to apply best practice on managing plastic waste. <span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);">Our global plastic pollution survey has been helping countries identify hotspots for rubbish in their waterways to develop intervention methods.</span></p><p>We also launched the Plastics Innovation Hub Indonesia to support the scaling of deep-tech solutions to tackle plastic waste in the region. This is set to roll out to other countries in the Indo-Pacific too. We are also working with India  to develop recycling innovation and a roadmap to better manage its waste.</p><p> </p><p><b style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);">How much rubbish is where: help us find out!</b></p><p><span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);">You can support us by collecting data on what rubbish is where.  </span>Our national plastic pollution survey will tell us how much plastic pollution there is across Australia. It will give us a picture of the types of rubbish ending up on our streets and beaches. This will then help us identify what methods would work best to reduce it.</p><p><span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);">Conversation Volunteers Australia is helping us with our data collection efforts. So far, more than 3000 Australians have helped collect 270,000 items of rubbish. They have also removed 9000 kilos worth! </span></p><p><span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);">Further innovations as part of our mission include researching the digestive processes of certain insects to understand if they can be used to breakdown waste, advanced recycling technologies to tackle hard-to-recycle plastics, PVC recycling to save it from landfill, and testing seaweed-derived polymers as a substitute for petroleum-based plastic.</span></p><p><span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);">We are working with a range of partners for this mission.</span></p>								</div>

									<p>UNSW researchers are part of a new project developing sustainable healthcare packaging products to replace petroleum-based plastics.</p>
<p>Healthcare plastic waste amounts to 1.25 million tons per year. Due to strict regulations and a growing consumer preference for eco-friendly plastic, there is a growing need for sustainable packaging. As a result, the biodegradable plastic packaging market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 17% from 2022 to 2030.</p>
<p>ARC Future Fellow A/Prof. Jin Zhang and Scientia Professor Chun Wang from UNSW Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, and ARC Laureate Fellow Professor Cyrille Boyer from UNSW Chemical Engineering are partnering with Ecopha Biotech to develop biodegradable plastic packaging products. The project, led by Ecopha Biotech and supported by Santevation and Refresh Waters, was awarded a $3 million grant over the next 3 years by the Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P), Round 14.</p>

The new products will replace traditional healthcare packaging products made from petroleum-based plastics to offer safety, high performance, and sustainability.</span></p>

<p>“Petroleum-based plastics cause a lot of waste and environmental pollution, as we can’t get rid of it for a very long time. The PHAs can degrade completely, so it’s a great option to protect the environment while still being able to use plastic products,” says A/Prof Jin Zhang.</p>
<p>Despite the superior physical and mechanical properties of PHAs compared to polylactic acid (PLA) and their great potential in medical applications, economically viable technologies for producing medical-grade PHA biodegradable polymers do not currently exist. Moreover, most PHAs typically exhibit brittle characteristics, physical aging issues and inadequate mechanical performance, rendering them unsuitable for healthcare packaging.</p>
<p>The UNSW research team aims to address these limitations by combining and functionalizing PHA biodegradable polymers with additional materials like biopolymers, bioactive substances, nanofillers, and synthetic compounds.</p>
<p>“Modifying the PHAs will enhance the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break, thermal stability and liquid and gas barrier properties,” says Scientia Professor Chun Wang.</p>
<p>The UNSW team will work with the industry partners to develop customer-tailored prototypes to ensure safe and high-performing Sustainable Healthcare Packaging (SHP). These new SHP products are applicable to markets such as drug delivery, pharmaceutical, diagnostics, and orthopaedics, and will contribute significantly to clean up healthcare plastic waste.</p>
<p>As such, the project closely aligns with the Government’s Circular Economy strategy, which includes the priorities “Reduction or Elimination of Waste” and “Phasing out Unnecessary and Problematic Plastics and Packaging”.</p>
<p>“As the global healthcare sector continues to grow at a significant rate, it intensifies the urgent need for sustainable and biodegradable packaging materials. Our project will offer a paradigm shift in healthcare packaging, addressing the critical issue of plastic waste, and contributing to the protection of our planet,” say A/Prof Jin Zhang and Prof. Cyrille Boyer.</p>
