EcoPHA Biotech has officially launched a landmark joint venture in China: Ecopha Biotech (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., marking a pivotal moment in the Australian company’s global expansion. This milestone not only enhances Australia’s leadership in sustainable innovation but also brings its revolutionary bioplastics to one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.

Global Expansion Milestone
Australian Biotech Ecopha Expands into China as Global Demand for Sustainable Plastics Surges June 18, 2025The signing ceremony took place in Suzhou, China, with Ecopha’s Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Wilson Ling (front left) present alongside local government officials and strategic partners. The collaboration will see the development of a 10,000-tonne annual capacity PHA production facility in Taihu New City, with manufacturing set to begin by 2026.

PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) is a marine-safe, fully biodegradable bioplastic that breaks down in soil and aquatic environments within months, leaving no microplastics behind. Ecopha’s PHA is derived from pongamia oil – a regenerative, non-edible crop native to Australia – offering a truly circular and scalable solution to plastic waste.

“The establishment of Ecopha Biotech (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. is a major milestone in bringing Ecopha’s innovative pongamia-based bioplastic technology to China,” said Dr. Wilson Ling.

“With the country’s growing demand for sustainable materials, this joint venture is well-positioned to scale PHA production and capture emerging market opportunities across food and healthcare packaging.”
