Bhutan absorbs more carbon than it emits. Building on that foundation, Ecopha is developing the Bhutan Carbon Platform—an integrated hub combining carbon removal, SAF production, EcoPHA bioplastics manufacturing, and land restoration.

Bhutan is one of the few places on earth where the relationship between land, people, and the atmosphere is genuinely regenerative. By absorbing more carbon than it emits, the nation has set a global standard for environmental stewardship.
Ecopha is building on that exact foundation. The Bhutan Carbon Platform is designed from the beginning to place environmental and community outcomes at its centre. It serves as a living blueprint for what a truly circular bioeconomy looks like when executed at scale.
This article details the vision behind the newly announced Bhutan Carbon Platform, shared via Ecopha's official channels.
Cultivating Pongamia for a Connected System
At the heart of the platform is the strategic planting of Pongamia trees on degraded land. These resilient trees actively absorb carbon as they grow, facilitating the recovery of local biodiversity and restoring areas previously stripped of their productive value into permanent tree cover.
The oil harvested from these trees feeds directly into the supply chains for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and EcoPHA bioplastics, creating a localized, continuous loop that generates sustainable income for rural farming communities.
Land Restoration
Planting Pongamia trees on degraded land to absorb carbon and restore biodiversity.
SAF Production
Supplying renewable oil to fuel the transition to decarbonised aviation.
EcoPHA Bioplastics
Manufacturing biodegradable materials from clean, non-food renewable oil.
Community Income
Ensuring rural communities earn a sustainable livelihood from cultivation.
This is not a pilot project. It is a blueprint for what circular bioeconomy development looks like when it is designed with environmental and community outcomes at its centre from the beginning.
Integrating Nature & Industry
The Bhutan Carbon Platform is an integrated bioeconomy hub combining carbon removal, sustainable aviation fuel production, EcoPHA bioplastics manufacturing, land restoration, biodiversity preservation, and rural employment generation in one connected system.
Bhutan Leads. The Model Follows.
By proving that an industrial supply chain can operate regeneratively, this initiative sets a precedent for future global developments. Biodiversity recovers as land formerly stripped of value returns to permanent, productive tree cover.
