While Rio Tinto focuses on turning pongamia oil into renewable diesel, EcoPHA is transforming the same oil—and its by-products—into marine-safe, home-compostable PHA bioplastics. This dual-purpose strategy maximises the value of pongamia and reduces waste across the entire lifecycle.

Ecopha Produces PHA from Pongamia Oil in a World First

“We believe in building systems where every input has multiple outputs,” said Dr Wilson Ling, CEO of EcoPHA. “The more we integrate sectors – agriculture, mining, packaging – the faster we accelerate toward a truly regenerative economy.”

EcoPHA’s patent-filed technology enables the production of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), a biodegradable plastic that breaks down in soil, compost, and marine environments within 3–6 months, leaving no trace behind.

Pongamia trees, native to northern Australia, thrive on degraded or previously mined land, making them ideal for both carbon sequestration and sustainable product development. After extracting pongamia oil, remaining residues can be repurposed into PHA bioplastic and even processed into cattle feed, creating a zero-waste value chain.

EcoPHA’s full-circle model converts agricultural and biofuel waste into packaging solutions that meet the growing demand from food service, healthcare, and events sectors under pressure to eliminate single-use plastics.
